WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce plugin for WordPress, transforming standard WordPress websites into fully functional online stores. As of August 2025, WooCommerce is the leading ecommerce platform on the internet with 4.5M+ stores, as measured by the third-party ecommerce measurement firm, StoreLeads.app

Launched in 2011 by WooThemes (later acquired by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com), WooCommerce quickly gained popularity due to its seamless integration with WordPress, its open-source nature, customizability, scalability, and its comprehensive set of features for managing online sales. WooCommerce allows merchants to sell a wide variety of products, including physical goods, digital downloads, subscriptions, and appointments, offering flexibility for diverse business models.

The strength of WooCommerce lies in its extensibility and the vast ecosystem it leverages. As an open-source solution, it provides users with full ownership and control over their store’s content and data. This core functionality can be significantly expanded through the Official WooCommerce Marketplace, which includes over a thousand free and paid extensions, covering everything from popular payment gateways, social and omnichannel platforms, global shipping options,  marketing and automation tools, and advanced analytics. Its deep integration with WordPress also means that WooCommerce stores benefit from WordPress’s robust content management capabilities and its extensive library of themes and plugins, allowing for highly customized and scalable ecommerce solutions.
